A wonderfully graphic pair of vintage Neoclassical armchairs combining the sweeping curves of the ancient Greek klismos chair with the architectural presence of a curule-form seat.
These striking armchairs feature beautifully shaped blonde wood frames with dramatically curved legs, open backs and stylized scrolled crest rails. Dark contrasting ball finials punctuate the four corners of each chair, giving the otherwise restrained frames a particularly handsome decorative detail.
The broad upholstered seats are finished in charcoal-gray fabric with dark trim, creating a sophisticated contrast against the warm honey-blonde wood. Viewed from the side, the exaggerated outward sweep of the legs gives the chairs an especially sculptural silhouette.
The design draws heavily from Greek Revival and Neoclassical furniture traditions, particularly the klismos chair, which became enormously influential during the late 18th and early 19th centuries and was repeatedly reinterpreted during later Neoclassical revivals. These appear to be a late-20th-century designer interpretation, likely dating from approximately the 1980s–1990s.
Their unusual form makes them particularly effective as occasional, desk, vanity or statement chairs. They would be equally convincing flanking a console or fireplace in a contemporary interior where their architectural silhouette can really be appreciated.
