An impressive large English earthenware platter featuring the “Antiquarian” pattern, attributed to Thomas Fell & Co., St. Peter’s Pottery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, dating from approximately 1830–1840.
The central transfer-printed scene depicts a wonderfully romantic landscape of Gothic ruins, monumental architecture and ancient archways, with a stag and doe in the foreground beside a flower-strewn riverbank. The scene is framed by a broad, undulating scalloped border combining intricate geometric decoration with abundant flowering branches and foliage.
Executed in a particularly attractive mulberry, or deep reddish-purple, underglaze transfer, the platter retains strong colour and excellent detail throughout the printed decoration.
The reverse bears the “Antiquarian” pattern title in an elaborate rustic branch and foliate cartouche. It also retains a substantial old metal hanging arrangement fitted around the reverse, allowing this unusually large platter to be displayed as a striking piece of antique wall decor.
At 45 × 36 cm, it has considerable presence and works particularly well as decorative wall art as well as being a collectible example of early 19th-century English transferware.
Condition: In very good antique and highly displayable condition. The glaze retains a pleasing brightness and the transfer decoration remains crisp and well defined. There is fine age-related crazing to the glaze, consistent with a piece approaching two centuries old. This is not readily visible across the decorated front under normal viewing conditions and is principally apparent upon very close inspection or magnification. There are expected minor signs of age and use. No major chips, structural cracks or significant staining observed. Please refer to the photographs for full condition details.
