Pander & zonen of the hague, dating from the transitional period between late art nouveau and early art deco, circa 1920–1925.

the desk has a balanced architectural form, softened by subtly rounded lines. The large rectangular top has gently curved front corners and rests on two pedestal sections, each fitted with three spacious drawers. The drawer fronts are slightly curved and framed with dark ebonized detailing. Rounded dark wooden handles and tapered feet with contrasting dark tips complete the design.

these restrained decorative accents, combined with the softer contours of the desk, are characteristic of the period in which the flowing forms of art nouveau gradually gave way to the more geometric language of art deco. The result is a practical piece of furniture with a refined and distinctly dutch appearance.

the desk is made from oak and oak veneer and offers generous storage and a comfortable central kneehole. The underside of the top is impressed "pander" and bears the number 133203, confirming its manufacture by h. Pander & zonen.

the writing surface has recently been refinished and is now fresh, smooth and ready for everyday use. The remainder of the desk retains its original aged character, with minor scratches, marks and wear consistent with its age. The original working key is present.
