The composition features a bottle of red wine accompanied by a wine glass, grapes, crackers, cheese, cork and serving knife arranged across a tabletop. Blue draperies and a small potted plant provide a domestic backdrop. Nicholas worked in a soft, expressive watercolor palette of powder blue, muted green, burgundy, ochre and warm neutral tones, giving the scene an inviting European-inspired character.

The artwork bears the Howard Nicholas name and “71” date, indicating execution in 1971.
Of particular note is the impressive frame. The watercolor has been presented in what appears to be a considerably earlier giltwood frame with applied composition/gesso ornamentation, displaying elaborate scrolling foliate motifs, shell-like details and raised decorative cartouches. The frame is designed in the Baroque/Rococo Revival tradition and appears to date approximately to the late 19th or early 20th century, circa 1890–1920.
The frame retains a beautifully aged gilt surface with authentic-looking patina, craquelure, rubbing and scattered losses consistent with considerable age. These imperfections contribute greatly to its antique character. The reverse construction also displays substantial age and suggests that the 1971 watercolor was later fitted into an earlier frame.
Presented under glass with a muted rose-colored mat.
