The oval-form wastebasket is decorated with … Read more Charming vintage metal wastebasket by J.L. Clark Manufacturing Co. of Rockford, Illinois, circa 1960s–1970s. The oval-form wastebasket is decorated with a wonderfully graphic faux stained-glass design depicting a group of colorful birds among dense leafy branches.

Rendered in shades of aqua blue, chartreuse, olive green, golden yellow, gray and black, the design mimics the segmented construction and dark leading of traditional stained glass. The overlapping birds and foliage give the piece a lush, almost tropical quality, while the strong black outlines and stylized composition lend it a distinctly Mid-Century Modern decorative character with echoes of Art Nouveau and Tiffany-style glass.

The lithographed decoration wraps around the sides, with the principal grouping of birds forming the focal point on the front and foliage continuing around the reverse. Rolled metal edges finish the top and bottom. The underside retains the impressed J.L. Clark Manufacturing Co., Rockford, Illinois maker's mark.

A particularly fun example of the decorative metal wastebaskets produced for stylish American interiors during the mid-20th century. Far too attractive to hide under a desk, it would also work beautifully as a decorative container, magazine holder or accessory in a library, powder room, bedroom or home office.
