This First Chair is an early model, produced in the mid-1980s. Designed by Michele De Lucchi for Memphis Milano in 1983, the First Chair is one of the most iconic pieces of seating furniture of the international postmodern movement. with its uncompromisingly sculptural form, the chair embodies the radical design approach of the Memphis movement, which redefined the boundaries between design, art, and architecture in the early 1980s.
The clean construction of lacquered tubular steel is complemented by circular and spherical wooden elements, creating a captivating composition of geometry, color, and volume. The swiveling, disc-shaped back, the characteristic spherical armrests, and the graphic design language give the chair an extraordinary presence that extends far beyond its function as a seat. The First Chair functions as both a functional object and a three-dimensional sculpture.
with this design, Michele De Lucchi created a piece of furniture that is among the most recognizable icons of the Memphis era and is now represented in important design collections and museums. Original examples from the early production period are particularly sought-after collector's items due to their historical significance and the relatively small number produced.
Whether as a standalone piece in a modern interior, a striking accent in a curated design collection, or a museum statement – the First Chair possesses an unmistakable expressiveness and exemplifies the creative awakening of Italian design in the 1980s.
An exceptional original from Memphis Milano – a rare opportunity to acquire a key work of design history. This piece has an attribution mark,
