The centre is hand-painted with a topographical harbor scene showing tall ships under sail, flying dutch flags, within a gilt-edged rocaille cartouche. The scalloped rim carries a blue feathered border, gilt scrollwork cartouches, and delicate polychrome floral sprays.

the original service was created at meissen between 1772 and 1774 for willem v, prince of orange, stadholder of the dutch republic — likely connected to the dutch east india company (voc). Meissen's painters worked from contemporary dutch prints to render accurate views of cities, harbors, and voc properties across the netherlands and its colonial territories, making the service as much a topographical record as a table service. The 435-piece service survives today primarily in the rijksmuseum and paleis het loo (see a. L. Den blaauwen, "the meissen service of stadholder willem v," paleis het loo, zwolle 1993).

this plate is a later meissen reproduction of that historic pattern, made using the same rococo "new spanish" relief moulding and hand-painted in the manufactory's traditional manner. It carries the underglaze blue crossed swords mark.
