Produced by Rosello, this armchair reflects a strand of French seating design shaped less by a single signature than by the expertise of a specialist manufacturer. Founded in 1928, Rosello successively took on several roles: designing its own models, manufacturing pieces for decorators, and later becoming a technical partner for some of the most demanding hospitality and restaurant projects.
The design of this armchair recalls certain chairs created by Jacques Adnet for the Compagnie des Arts Français, particularly a model published in 1929 in Sièges modernes. Here, Rosello offers a broader, more enveloping interpretation, most likely produced between the late 1940s and the 1950s. The inclined backrest, deep seat and generous proportions reflect the evolution of the Art Deco vocabulary towards greater domestic comfort, while retaining its strong graphic character.
Founded in 1928, Rosello occupies a distinctive position within the French decorative arts: a company capable not only of producing its own designs, but also of bringing decorators’ projects to life. Its workshops later contributed to the furnishing of prestigious interiors including Le Meurice, redesigned by Philippe Starck, the Royal Monceau, and Le Violon d’Ingres. In 2018, Rosello’s acquisition by Pierre Frey extended this legacy, with the workshop becoming a manufacturing base for collections designed by figures such as Sam Baron, Constance Guisset and Guillaume Delvigne. This armchair belongs to an earlier period, when Rosello was still primarily a specialist seating manufacturer, with equal attention paid to construction and design.
The armchair has recently been restored and reupholstered in cream velvet. It retains a few discreet signs of age and use to the wooden frame, a very slight degree of movement, as well as a minor finishing irregularity at the junction between the seat and backrest, visible in the detailed photographs. None of these affect the chair’s stability or structural integrity.
