Antique Arts & Crafts Wrought Iron & Hand-Blown Amber Glass Pendant Lantern
An exceptional late 19th or early 20th-century British Arts & Crafts pendant lantern. Masterfully constructed from hand-wrought iron, it features a textured, conical "witch's hat" canopy with hand-hammered detailing, suspending a cylindrical cage. Encased within is its magnificent, original amber glass cylinder, exceptionally thick and hand-blown, showcasing beautiful historic imperfections including trapped air bubbles (seeds), striations, and organic waves. The lantern retains its original matching iron chain and ceiling rose, offering a beautifully moody, atmospheric glow that epitomizes the honest craftsmanship of the Arts & Crafts movement.
Why We Love It
Spectacular Hand-Blown Glass: The survival of the original amber glass cylinder is rare. The pronounced seeds and historic waves in the glass diffuse light with incredible warmth and texture.
Honest, Wrought Construction: Every element shows the mark of the maker, from the dimpled, hand-hammered texture on the cowl to the visible strap-work joints on the cage.
Complete & Ready to Hang: Retaining its original hanging chain and matching scalloped ceiling plate, it offers a complete, authentic architectural lighting solution.

Historical Context
Dating from circa 1890–1910, this lantern is heavily influenced by the design principles of William Morris and the guilds of the Arts & Crafts movement, which rejected industrial mass-production. Lanterns of this specific form were often used in grand entrance halls, country house porches, or atmospheric dining spaces to create an intimate, welcoming light utilising the natural amber tones popular during the period.
Why It Works Today
Industrial and Arts & Crafts ironwork is highly favored by contemporary interior designers for its ability to cut through softer textures in a room. Suspended in an entry hall, over a kitchen island, or lighting a rustic dining space, its warm amber glass and dark iron frame provide a striking architectural silhouette.
Perfect For
An atmospheric statement light in a period entrance hall, vestibule, or boot room.
Adding authentic texture to a cottage, barn conversion, or historic country property.
Bringing a moody, warm ambient glow to an intimate dining corner or study.
