This antique English Regency mahogany side chair (c. 1820) features a robust frame crafted from genuine old-growth Cuban mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni)- a legendary, dense timber celebrated for its deep, chatoyant grain and rich natural patina that is virtually unobtainable today due to centuries of over-harvesting and strict modern conservation bans.

The frame showcases Neo-Classical hand-carved detailing—including a reeded crest rail, a central tablet with carved floral rosettes and vertical fluting, and a handsome barber-pole spiral twist crossbar.

The turned and reeded front legs pair with subtle rear saber legs, exemplifying authentic Regency proportions. The drop-in seat has been professionally recovered in a lush William Morris-inspired botanical tapestry weave in deep indigo, sage, and rose, finished with dark blue braided gimp trim. (Teddy bear not included.)

The frame underwent a full conservation pass using traditional materials:

• Finish: Hand-applied, shellac finish that enhances the rich auburn undertones and chatoyancy of the Cuban mahogany grain.

• Surface Stabilization: Historic, inactive woodworm flight and tack holes, along the lower frame and seat rails, were individually filled with traditional burn-in lacquer and leveled flush before shellacking, preserving the authentic period character while ensuring a smooth, flawless touch.
