A refined and highly sculptural vide poche or centerpiece designed by Max Ingrand and manufactured by Fontana Arte, Italy, circa 1960. This elegant piece exemplifies the refined sensibility and material mastery for which both Ingrand and Fontana Arte are celebrated. Executed in the maison’s signature green-tinted crystal glass, the shallow bowl has a striking presence with its luminous, slightly aquatic hue that changes character depending on the light. The glass rests on a solid brass tulip-shaped base that provides both stability and a warm contrast to the cool tones of the glass. Rising gracefully from the center is a tall, tapering handle with a circular finial, a detail that transforms the object into something sculptural and architectural. While adding a dramatic visual element, the handle also has a practical function, making it easy to move the piece from place to place. The condition of this example is very good, with no chips or cracks to the glass, and the brass showing a beautifully aged patina that enhances its character and authenticity. This interplay of materials, luminous glass and warm brass, captures the timeless elegance that made Fontana Arte one of the most important Italian manufacturers of the 20th century. Max Ingrand, who served as artistic director of Fontana Arte from 1954 to 1967, introduced a sculptural approach to decorative objects and lighting. His designs often combined functionality with bold, architectural lines, turning utilitarian pieces into works of art. This centerpiece embodies that philosophy, offering both beauty and practicality in equal measure. Among the finest and most striking examples of Fontana Arte’s decorative glass production, this centerpiece stands as a true collector’s item, admired not only for its rarity but also for its enduring modern elegance. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
