This “Cavour” desk was designed by Carlo Mollino in 1949 and later reissued by Italian manufacturer Zanotta. Its open construction, large glass surface and dark wooden frame give the desk a distinctive architectural character.
Mollino developed the design through his research into lightweight yet strong structural forms, an approach also visible in his architecture and designs for ski stations. Two shaped wooden supports extend diagonally beneath the clear glass top, creating an expressive frame while keeping the working area visually open.
A lockable pedestal on one side contains drawers accessible from both sides, offering practical storage without interrupting the overall composition. On the opposite side is an open pull-out tray with a separate glass top, supported by slender metal braces. Dark-stained wood, black lacquered details, metal fittings and transparent glass create a balanced combination of materials. The original key is included.
The contrast between the organic wooden supports and the rectangular storage elements is characteristic of Mollino’s work. Although conceived in 1949, the Cavour still feels remarkably contemporary and works equally well as a desk or as a central piece within an office, library or living space. Zanotta continues to produce the model under an exclusive licence.
The desk is in good vintage condition, with signs of use consistent with its age. The wooden surfaces, lacquered elements and glass top show some wear and scratches; please refer to the detailed photographs. This piece has an attribution mark,
