A wonderfully decorative matched pair of 1975 Ethan Allen “Thumb Back” Windsor dining chairs, distinguished by beautifully preserved folk-art stenciling and a classic two-tone finish.
Each chair combines a warm natural wood seat with a creamy painted frame, fine dark pinstriping and antiqued gold-tone accents. The standout feature is the exceptionally well-preserved stenciling across each shaped crest rail, featuring a leaping deer surrounded by stylized trees, foliage and floral motifs. Despite approximately 50 years of use, these intricate designs remain remarkably crisp and vivid.
The classic Windsor-inspired form features shaped thumb-back spindles, tall turned rear posts, turned legs and stretchers, gently shaped wood seats and graceful proportions. Fine painted detailing throughout gives the pair considerably more decorative presence than a traditional all-wood Windsor chair.
The backs retain their distinctive factory-applied “Ethan Allen ★★★ Thumb Back Chair ★★★” markings, providing an especially charming period detail and identifying Ethan Allen’s name for the design.
These chairs retain their vintage finish and show genuine age- and use-related character. Most notably, there is finish and paint loss along the upper edges of both crest rails, along with scattered chips, scratches, rubs and areas of finish loss elsewhere. In contrast, the intricate deer-and-foliage crest stenciling itself has survived in exceptionally well-preserved condition, making the decorative treatment the defining feature of this pair.
Underside factory markings include a date marking consistent with 1975 production.
The combination of Ethan Allen craftsmanship, classic Windsor form, two-tone finish and unusually well-preserved folk-art decoration makes this matched pair particularly appealing for a traditional, Americana, Colonial Revival, cottage, farmhouse or collected interior.
