The Bruno Mathsson 'Eva' chair is one of the most iconic and important designs in Swedish modern furniture history, recognized as a pioneering work of ergonomic design and bentwood craftsmanship.
The Eva chair was designed by Bruno Mathsson in 1934 and first presented to the public at his debut exhibition in 1936 . The name "Eva" reflects Mathsson's practice of giving each of his furniture lines female names to create a distinct identity for his designs .
What makes the Eva chair truly revolutionary is its ergonomic foundation. Mathsson was a pioneer of what we now call ergonomics—he famously studied the "mechanics of sitting" by sitting in a snowdrift and examining the impression his body left behind . He used this contour as the basis for the chair's sculpted shape, ensuring it would support the human form naturally and comfortably.
The Eva chair is defined by its continuous, flowing frame of bent laminated beech or birch—a dramatic, biomorphic form that was radical for its time . The seat is made from woven webbing (originally hemp, later linen or other textiles), which creates a flexible, breathable surface that conforms to the sitter's body . This combination of laminated bentwood and woven seat was Mathsson's signature, blending Swedish cabinet-making tradition with modernist innovation.
Early examples were produced by Karl Mathsson (the designer's family workshop) in Värnamo, Sweden . In the 1960s, Mathsson entered into a production agreement with Dux which began manufacturing and distributing his bentwood furniture more
The Eva chair's design significance is underscored by its inclusion in major museum collections worldwide. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London holds a version of the Eva chair in its permanent collection (accession number W.13:1, 2-1979), dating from approximately 1934-1936 . Mathsson's work also earned international recognition early in his career, including a Grand Prix at the Paris World Fair. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
