the piece is formed as two scalloped, shell-shaped bowls connected by an ornate raised scroll handle. Each bowl is individually hand painted with a miniature pastoral scene in the romantic 18th-century manner, depicting figures within a rural landscape. Soft blue and cranberry-pink decoration follows the moulded contours, while the handle is finished in yellow and brown with gilt detailing.
its asymmetrical form, elaborate moulding and delicate painted decoration reflect the historicist rococo revival taste popular during the late 19th century. Originally intended for serving salt at the dining table, it now makes an attractive decorative object or collector’s piece.
the underside bears the green cfh / gdm / france manufacturer’s mark.
