This superb, grand-scale original poster was produced for Alex Katz's first major retrospective, held at the Whitney Museum of American Art in the spring of 1986. The featured work, Red Coat, a portrait of his wife Ada, is among his most celebrated works and a quintessential example of his signature style: flat, figurative, simple, and bold, with broad swathes of color creating a visually striking image. The portrait captures the tension between intimacy and distance —the subject's face is cropped extra close and pushed to the very front of the picture plane, yet her expression remains so distant, absorbed in quiet introspection. Originally conceived as a large-scale painting, now held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the work was subsequently issued as a limited-edition print. This special exhibition poster was produced in the same size as the limited-edition print and is a high-quality lithograph printed in Switzerland.
