Pencil and charcoal on paper. Monogrammed lower left. A leading exponent of 19th-century Lombard painting, always tied to a love of "true reality," Pompeo Mariani was also known as the "Italian Impressionist" due to the influence of French Impressionism and the experiences, not only cultural, that defined the Belle Époque, which the artist lived in Milan, Bordighera, Nice, and Monte Carlo. The sketch presented here harks back to the early 20th century, when Mariani created many genre scenes related to high society and social life, especially in Milan. Framed. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
