Presented in glossy black frames, the contrasting vertical and horizontal compositions have a strong graphic presence.

The vertical landscape depicts “Night Rain at Karasaki” (Karasaki Yau), one of the famed Eight Views of Ōmi (Ōmi Hakkei) overlooking Lake Biwa. The composition is after a 19th-century work by renowned Japanese ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting the celebrated Karasaki pine amid falling rain, distant mountains and boats. Japanese inscriptions and vivid red cartouches provide a graphic contrast to the muted landscape.

The horizontal work depicts a Japanese temple landscape in winter, with snow-covered pines, traditional architecture, mountains and water in a restrained palette of blue, green, cream and gray.

The works were acquired during the Vietnam era in Japan and were professionally framed in the United States in the 1990s.

The opposing vertical and horizontal formats make an especially compelling pairing and work beautifully displayed together on a gallery wall, above a console or chest, or incorporated into a collected interior.

Vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. Some wear to the frames and backing paper, as shown in photographs.
