French Art Deco presentation barometer by Bancelin of Paris, dated 1935. This unusual interwar piece combines a functional aneroid barometer with an architectural stepped metal case and presentation base, stamped “BANCELIN PARIS” and inscribed across the front “PRIX DE L’AIGUILLE VERTE 1935.”
The silvered French-language dial is marked Tempête, Pluie ou Vent, Variable, Beau Temps, and Très Sec, with a traditional pressure scale and adjustable reference hand. The circular instrument rests between two scroll-form supports on a geometric stepped plinth characteristic of the Art Deco period.
Bancelin was a Parisian maker of silver and silver-plated decorative wares and is known to have produced presentation and prize pieces during this period. The present example appears to be silver-plated metal with brass-tone mounts.
The inscription translates as “Aiguille Verte Prize, 1935.” The Aiguille Verte is the celebrated Alpine peak in the Mont Blanc massif overlooking the Chamonix valley. Period research has identified comparable Chamonix ski competitions named for prominent local peaks, making an Alpine sporting association plausible; however, the precise event represented by this inscription has not been identified.
The barometer currently responds to atmospheric pressure and has produced readings closely corresponding with contemporary local weather data, although it has not been professionally tested or calibrated.
A particularly evocative piece of 1930s French design, combining Art Deco decorative appeal, horological/meteorological interest, and the history of the presentation trophy.
France, 1935.
