A wonderfully sculptural vintage ceramic cabbageware or lettuceware serving bowl, dating to approximately the 1980s.
Generously proportioned and raised upon four integrated feet, the bowl is modeled as a cluster of overlapping cabbage leaves. Deeply molded veins, softly folded edges, and an irregular, undulating rim give the piece an appealing organic quality. The exterior is finished in layered shades of leafy green, while the glossy cream-colored interior provides a crisp and elegant contrast.
The bowl’s substantial size makes it especially useful as a serving piece or decorative centerpiece. It would be beautiful filled with seasonal fruit, artichokes, citrus, hydrangeas, or a loose arrangement of garden flowers. When not in use, its expressive botanical form allows it to stand alone as a piece of decorative ceramic sculpture.
Cabbageware and lettuceware have long appeared in fashionable interiors and tablescapes, but the style became particularly associated with Palm Beach entertaining through the celebrated lettuceware created by Florida ceramicist Dodie Thayer. This unmarked example is not attributed to Thayer; however, it captures the same playful botanical spirit and glamorous garden-inspired aesthetic that have made vintage lettuceware highly collectible.
An excellent addition to a Hollywood Regency, Palm Beach, traditional, maximalist, Grandmillennial, country-house or garden-inspired interior.
