Vintage Barnard & Simonds Black Leather Armchair | 1960s American Traditional | Button-Tufted Leather & Bobbin-Turned Wood
A distinguished example of mid-century American craftsmanship, this vintage Barnard & Simonds Co. armchair combines richly finished turned hardwood, luxurious black leather upholstery, and traditional hand-crafted detailing. Dating to the circa 1960s, this substantial accent chair reflects the company’s celebrated interpretation of classic American and English furniture traditions.
The chair features an exceptionally handsome bobbin- and spool-turned wooden frame, with intricately turned legs, arm supports, and H-shaped structural stretchers. The architectural woodwork creates a striking contrast against the deep black leather upholstery, giving the chair an elegant yet substantial presence.
The generously padded back and seat showcase deep button tufting, lending a sophisticated Chesterfield-inspired character, while rows of decorative brass nailhead trim outline the lower upholstered apron for an additional touch of traditional luxury. Gently curved wooden arms and turned baluster supports complete the distinctive silhouette.
The design incorporates elements associated with French Provincial, Louis XIII, William & Mary, and traditional English country furniture, creating a wonderfully collected, old-world aesthetic with the durability and craftsmanship characteristic of fine American furniture.
Barnard & Simonds Co. Provenance
Barnard & Simonds was an esteemed American furniture manufacturer founded in Rochester, New York, in 1898, known for producing finely crafted adaptations of American and English traditional furniture. In 1959, the company moved production to Grand Rapids, Michigan, an important center of American furniture manufacturing.
The company was acquired by Baker Furniture in 1967, and the Barnard & Simonds name was ultimately retired in the early 1970s. This chair therefore represents an interesting period in the company’s history and is an appealing addition for collectors of vintage American furniture, Grand Rapids furniture, traditional seating, and Baker-associated furniture history.
