A striking antique Chinese red leather-covered wooden box, attributed to the Late Qing Dynasty to Early Republic period, circa 1900–1920.
The box features a richly aged red/oxblood surface with embossed and gilt decoration, including prominent Double Happiness (囍) motifs traditionally associated with marriage, celebration, and wishes for a harmonious union. The symbolism suggests that the piece may originally have served as a wedding, dowry, or bridal trousseau box.
The front is decorated with additional gilt scrolling ornament surrounding a dark metal clasp, while the rear retains its aged hinges and period-style hardware. The naturally worn surface, softened gilding, and darkened metal give the piece exceptional decorative character.
A particularly appealing feature is the removable handwoven interior tray, worked in natural and muted red and green fibers. The tray fits the box closely, appears period to the piece, and is believed to be original, though this cannot be documented with certainty.
The interior retains an aged tan lining with visible stitching and expected signs of use.
The box has not been refinished to a new appearance. Its surface wear and patina have been retained, giving it the layered, authentic quality that makes antique Chinese decorative objects so appealing in an interior.
Acquired from a five-generation Greenwich, Connecticut family collection, where it had been retained among the family’s accumulated objects and antiques.
A wonderful decorative object for a library, living room, dressing room, or collected interior, and equally suitable as a jewelry, keepsake, or display box.

The red leather-covered surface shows expected rubbing, fading, and areas of surface wear, especially across the lid, resulting in an attractive aged patina. There is a small split to the leather covering near one rear corner, visible in the photographs. The gilt decoration is partially worn, and the metal hardware has naturally darkened with age. The interior lining shows typical staining and edge wear, and the removable woven tray has minor age-related wear and irregularities. Overall, the box presents very well and retains a strong decorative appearance. The age-related wear is part of its character and has been left intact rather than restored away. less
