About the Poster: As opposed to the French who pioneered the lithographic process, Cuban poster production in the 1950s and … Read more About the Poster: As opposed to the French who pioneered the lithographic process, Cuban poster production in the 1950s and 60s was primarily centered around silk screening. Images were built up through layers of paint rather than ink, resulting in a poster which more closely resembled a painting than a traditional litho.

This particular poster was commissioned by the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC), which was formed in 1959. The Kid - the film this work is based on ('chicuelo' in Spanish translates to 'little kid') - was initially released in 1921. While decades may have passed between the launch of the film and the creation of Azcuy's poster, the image of Chaplin and a young Jackie Coogan peeking around a brick wall has since become iconic. Azcuy has simply yet effectively given the scene a more minimalist and modern look, while keeping true to the movie's origins.

About the movie, The Kid: "Chaplin's first full-length feature is a silent masterpiece about a little tramp who discovers a little orphan and brings him up but is left desolate when the orphanage reclaims him.
