David Hostetler (1926–2015) was an American sculptor and painter best known for his "American Woman" Goddess series — carved wood and bronze female forms held in over 25 museum collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the DeCordova Museum, and the Butler Institute of American Art. He taught for 38 years as Professor Emeritus at Ohio University, where his students included Jim Dine.
"Asherah Grove," 1995, extends his signature Goddess imagery into print form — a trio of elongated, tree-trunk figures rendered in his hallmark palette of teal, dusty rose, and plum, their swirled, target-like forms echoing the sacred groves of the work's namesake, the Canaanite fertility goddess Asherah. Hand-signed, dated, and numbered 1/6 in pencil by the artist — a very small edition — this impression carries a personal dedication, "For Lee, with love and thanks, Shalom," inscribed by Hostetler himself in December 1996.
A rare, small-edition print from an artist whose paper works are a scarce complement to his major sculptural output. Acquired at auction with clean provenance.
