Crafted from solid white oak and now stripped to reveal a beautifully softened natural patina, the bookcase has an extraordinary presence, with the pale, time-worn oak allowing the depth and precision of its carving to emerge with remarkable clarity.
The Renaissance Revival was one of the great historicist movements of 19th century France, inspired by the architecture, decorative arts and furniture of the French Renaissance. During this period, accomplished cabinetmakers returned to the vocabulary of the 16th and early 17th centuries, when furniture was conceived almost architecturally and enriched by the work of highly skilled carvers. Within this revival, the celebrated French Hunt style developed its own distinctive identity, particularly associated with country estates, hunting lodges and château interiors. Its decoration drew upon the traditions of the hunt and the abundance of nature, incorporating game, fruit, vines, foliage and trophies as symbols of prosperity and the pleasures of country life.
This remarkable antique is an especially decorative example of that tradition.
