An exceptional period example of Maxfield Parrish’s iconic Daybreak, presented in its original ornate frame and preserved in remarkably beautiful condition.
Originally published by The House of Art, New York, Daybreak is among the most recognizable and celebrated images of the American Golden Age of Illustration. Parrish’s extraordinary use of luminous blues, atmospheric mountain scenery, classical architecture, and idealized figures is displayed beautifully in this large-format period print.
This example retains the important printed identifiers along the lower edge, including “The House of Art, N.Y.” and “Maxfield Parrish.” The image measures approximately 29.5" × 17.5", consistent with the large-format House of Art editions of Daybreak.
What makes this particular example especially desirable is its presentation. The print remains housed in its original period frame, an elaborate carved and molded design finished in antiqued gold with dark contrasting details. The frame complements Parrish’s rich blue and golden palette beautifully and gives the piece an impressive architectural presence.
Both the print and original frame are in exceptional condition, particularly considering their age. The image remains remarkably clean and vibrant, with Parrish’s celebrated blue palette, mountainous background, architectural columns and figures retaining wonderful definition. The frame is likewise beautifully preserved.
A striking surviving example of one of the defining images of early 20th-century American illustration, equally suited to a serious Maxfield Parrish collection or as a statement piece in a traditional, Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, maximalist or collected interior.
