The Meissen manufactory was founded in 1710 by Augustus the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. The Standard Blue Onion was painted exclusively in underglaze cobalt blue. However, special variant pieces featuring hand-painted overglaze red/orange accents and lavish gold gilding were custom-commissioned or produced in limited quantities for royal banquets, elite nobility, and high-ranking courts of Europe. The deep cobalt blue is painted underglaze, while the luminous red highlights and filigree gold trim are hand-applied over the glaze and fired a second time. Genuine royal-era and antique pieces feature Meissen's underglaze blue crossed swords mark (which on every piece in this collection).
This is a collection of Rich Meissen Blue Onion (or Royal) China with gold trim and red accents, with service for 8 (tea cups; saucers; pasta/soup bowl; salad plate; dinner plate- there are only 6 fruit/sorbet bowls in this collection). It is in perfect mint condition as it has never been used. Absolutely beautiful!
