Traveling Man Treasures is selling this stunning Songye power fetish figure (Nkisi or Nkishi) during the first half of the 20th century. The carving is in excellent display and structural condition as shown, with a variety of age-related cracks that are highlighted by a beautiful, warm patina.
DIMENSIONS: 10" H x 8" W x 7.5" D
A receptacle of healing power, this figure rises from a thick organic base. The carving has been hollowed out from the head to the base, where a magical charge would have been introduced by the diviner-healer. The action of these therapeutic ingredients could be accompanied by various accessories, talismans disguised as metal, textiles, or shells and beads, each with a specific role; however, this piece may have been "desacralized."
