This piece is a beautifully balanced expression of mid-century romance, this vintage slant-front secretary desk from Dixie Furniture Company captures the quiet charm of historical European design. Crafted during the 1960s American revival of French Provincial aesthetics, the “DuBarry” line was named in honor of Jeanne Becu, Comtesse du Barry - the legendary muse of King Louis the XV. This heritage is gracefully preserved in the piece’s fluid lines, serpentine-influenced framing and delicate slender cabriole legs.
The desk is built from solid oak and fine veneers, boasting a rich, warm wood grain that brings natural texture and grounded elegance to any room. Functionality balances its artful form; the smooth drop-front lowers securely, unmasking a thoughtfully arranged interior gallery filled with petite storage skirts and built-in cubbies. Below the workspace, two generous full-width drawers provide seamless, concealed storage, punctuated by their original, highly ornate aged brass drawer pulls.
There is an undeniable magic to how a secretary desk anchors a room. What makes this piece so deeply cherished is its dual soul—serving as a spacious, inspiring command center for journaling or daily organization when open, while folding away into a clean, understated statement of historic beauty when closed. It effortlessly introduces a soft, lived-in warmth, blending a touch of nostalgic storytelling with everyday functionality.
