One of the sad but equally funny recollections from my Hong Kong childhood was my 'Nanny's threat that if I did not study hard, I might as well pick up the shoe shine box and earn my living in that manner. The box then is not quite as refined as this one here which is made of elm wood and constructed in the traditional method using several joinery. It has good strong legs that ended in hoof feet. This style of clean lines and plain appearance is consistent with furniture made in the Chinese Republic period (1912 - 1949 CE.) Beaded edges ran through the edges of the legs and on the drawer.
It is a useful piece of furniture to hold a plant, or a foot stool.
