During the frenzy times when designers were looking for authentic Chinese country furniture with original patina, we were delighted to … Read more During the frenzy times when designers were looking for authentic Chinese country furniture with original patina, we were delighted to find a group of furniture that appeared to have come out of a farmhouse where the occupants ages ago made furniture out of planks of wood. This footstool somehow escaped notice and I am glad for it. It reminded me of a Southern Song (1123 to 1279 CE) figure painting of a village woman bathing a young child in a wooden tub. She was sitting low on the ground on a stool very much like this one here. The wood plank is well weathered with knife cut marks and discolorations all over. It is supported by a bridge stretches and strong, squat trestle legs. But it is not entirely without style, please notice the beaded edges on the wood plank's bottom edge and along the trestle legs. Most of the pieces are original except for two side pieces of the apron. Its construction is by the traditional method and the four joints are quite visible on the top plank. The stool is of a low height but the almost two inches thick plank is heavy and can support good weight and is very sturdy. See less
