These pieces date back as far as the 1800s and were often used as carnival prizes.
Chalkware is composed of plaster of Paris (a carving, as opposed to mold, in this example).
Since it is unfired, unlike a glaze, its colors are exposed, and the coatings offer little protection. Hence, these pieces are easy chipped / broken, given the fragile quality of materials. Wear is accepted and expected with pieces of this material.
In this case, there is light, general wear/patina present, but no chips, cracks, crazing or losses (what appears to be a a small fleck around the ear is a small manufacturing flaw, evidenced by the original paint present).
Very nice piece of Mid-Century chalkware in attractive palette of orange, black, white, and blue, with a charming subject matter equipped with sweet bow tied around his leg.
