Original hand colored wood engraving from the celebrated Picturesque America series in 1872. The scene captures one of America's most important port cities at the height of its commercial prominence. The bustling Mississippi River waterfront at New Orleans showcases the city's thriving maritime commerce during the post-Civil War era. Steam-powered paddlewheelers, sailing vessels, working docks, and small fishing craft fill the harbor, while church spires and the growing skyline rise in the distance.
