Marcel Vasseur & EJG
A French 1925-1930 art deco chandelier in wrought iron by the Parisian blacksmith M.Vasseur. It holds 5 shades in molded-pressed enameled glass produced by EJG. This glass factory made numerous different model side-shades slip shades and bowls in this style. With the flowers enameled in green and old-pink and the shades surface patinated with a brick-orange patina. The shades are unsigned. Some of these enameled models from this series are signed J.Robert. Most of them however are unsigned. The sober yet strong and convincing design of the forged mount makes a nice contrast to the different textures of the hammered iron and the colors and decoration of the shades.
The chandelier has a height of 75 cm (29,5") and is 63 cm wide (24,8"). It is good condition. One of the four side shades has a small chip that will hardly notice when the lamp is in place (see last picture). I have cleaned and patinated the wrought iron. A nice deep brown almost black egg gloss. It comes newly wired. It holds American candelabra base sockets.

Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first world war Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in molded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J.Robert pseudonym for J. Gauthier based on the street name of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.
