The model appears … Read more A vintage Nizza chair designed by Bengt Ruda for IKEA, dating to the turn of the 1960s. The model appears in IKEA’s period catalogs and belongs to the early years of Ruda’s work for the company, which he joined in 1957 as its first formally trained furniture designer. The teak frame is built around a sharply splayed A-form, with the rear legs continuing upward to support a broad, gently curved backrest. A darker inlaid detail follows the angle of the supports, giving the otherwise simple chair a quiet graphic quality. The upholstered seat softens the angular frame and is currently finished in bright green fabric.
Light in scale but full of character, the Nizza works well as a dining chair, desk chair, or occasional chair placed on its own. The compact proportions make it especially useful in a bedroom, entry, or smaller sitting area where the sculptural frame can remain visible.
