A beautifully mounted set of Toea shell currency pieces from Papua New Guinea. Taken from a word in the Motu language for the arm shells long worn by natives in southern Papua New Guinea, generally, only one or maybe two Toea can be cut from the Tronchus snail shell, thus signifying their value. Wonderful pieces from pre-colonial times, each displayed wonderfully on a custom stand. From an old Austrailian collection.
