Naturalistically cast with an elongated body, individually textured scales, splayed toes and a dramatically curling tail, this unusual piece of antique architectural hardware transforms a functional fitting into a highly decorative work of animal sculpture. The gecko’s animated pose creates the convincing impression of a reptile clinging naturally to the surface of a door.

The bronze displays a richly aged, characterful patina. Deep brown tones cover much of the surface, while naturally rubbed golden highlights accentuate the head, limbs and raised scales. Areas of green verdigris remain within the recessed details, adding depth, colour and authentic antique character.

This sculptural door knocker is catalogued as American Arts and Crafts and presented in the manner of Oscar Bruno Bach (1884–1957), the German-born American metalworker celebrated for his decorative architectural metalwork and finely modelled bronze objects.
