Fine, beautifully aged, elegant vintage 4-panel Japanese Byobu (folding screen) depicts scenes from "The Tale of Genji", a classic work of Japanese literature about Prince Genji Monogatari by the noblewoman and poet, lady Murasaki Shikibu. There is a worn label on the frame "Tosa". It is believed to be a vintage reproduction painting after "The Genji Monogatari" byobu by Tosa Mitsuki/Tosa Mitsuyoshi. Signed and sealed. Very well done. Gouache, watercolor and ink on gold leaf style paper. Silk brocade border. Lacquered black wood frame with engraved copper crners, plaques and medallions, showing some age patina. Paper on back. Japan, Shōwa Era, circa 1950-1960s. Very Good condition - no damage to the painting nor back, minor age wear overall, some water stains on the upper silk border of the 3rd and 4th panels, minor age wear to the frame, strong hinges, clean, sturdy. This byobu most likely had one owner in the past.
