An exceptional and highly unusual late 19th Century French marble-topped meuble de toilette or dressing cabinet, veneered throughout in beautifully figured bird's-eye maple and mounted with finely executed faux bamboo.
Inspired by the French Japonisme movement during the Belle Époque, this magnificent cabinet combines architectural elegance with outstanding craftsmanship. The rich bird's-eye maple veneers are beautifully complemented by warm fruitwood faux bamboo mouldings, creating a striking contrast that is both refined and wonderfully decorative. The large original bevel-edged mirror is framed beneath a distinctive temple-inspired pediment, whilst the flanking marble shelves and cupboards provide useful storage for dressing accessories or toiletries.
The beautifully figured white marble top and splashback sit above two frieze drawers and a generous shelved cupboard below, making this a remarkably practical piece as well as an exceptionally decorative one. Every surface has been carefully considered, from the carefully matched veneers to the finely turned faux bamboo details and geometric applied mouldings, all of which reflect the skill and confidence of the cabinetmaker.
Originally conceived as a luxurious meuble de toilette, it would make a wonderful statement piece in a bedroom, dressing room or bathroom.
