Gateleg tables have been part of English domestic life since the 17th century, valued for their ability to provide a generous surface while occupying very little room when folded. This 19th century antique example carries that practical tradition into a compact form suited for use as an end table, occasional table or intimate tea table. Left open it makes a lovely round center table, as well, while with the leaf dropped it can serve as a demilune console. Very versatile!
The round top opens from a narrow eighteen-inch depth to a full thirty-four-inch diameter, allowing the table to adapt easily beside a sofa, between chairs or within a smaller sitting area. Deeply turned urn-form legs give the base a strong sculptural presence, joined by box stretchers and finished with rounded feet. The pierced apron adds a decorative architectural detail beneath the molded edge of the top.
The dark oak retains a rich, aged surface that emphasizes the grain and substantial construction. Its combination of historical form, useful scale and distinctive English character makes it an appealing furnishing from every angle.
Circa mid-1800s
