A rare collector’s piece, this large-format, hand-pulled original screenprint of Achaian, 1981—one of Bridget Riley's most celebrated works—was produced in a small, limited edition for the Tate Gallery, which holds the original painting in its permanent collection. Achaian belongs to a series Riley produced immediately following her travels to Egypt in the winter of 1979–80, where she was struck by the stark contrast between the vast, bright desert and the verdant, life-giving banks of the Nile. Visiting the tombs of the Pharaohs, she was moved by the luminous, life-affirming art achieved through just a handful of elemental hues—blue, turquoise, red, yellow, green, black, and white. These experiences, and the visual vocabulary they revealed, led to a pivotal breakthrough in her work, inspiring the celebrated "Egyptian Palette" stripe paintings of which Achaian is a prime example. The work is widely regarded as a masterclass in color—in the relationships, interactions, and sequencing that produce a pure visual sensation of chromatic rhythm, movement, balance, and harmony. Its title, referring to the ancient Greek peoples, echoes the painting's own character: conceptual vigor paired with an elemental simplicity of structure and color. This screenprint was meticulously hand-printed by Artizan Editions of Hove, UK, with particular attention paid to fidelity to the original.
