An early 19th century Chinese export black lacquer tea caddy, richly decorated with hand painted gilt scenes depicting traditional Chinese architecture, figures and flowering landscapes.
Resting on finely cast lion's paw feet, the caddy is accented with delicate ivory details that frame the decoration without overwhelming the design.
Although the original interior fittings are no longer present and the caddy does not retain its key, it remains a highly decorative example of Chinese export craftsmanship from the early Qing period, circa 1800 to 1820. Honest wear to the lacquer reflects two centuries of use and adds to its authentic character.
