Dating from 1935 and 1936, the set was presented to the same soldier while attending the famed Cavalry School at Fort Riley, Kansas — one of the most prestigious military training institutions in America before the transition from horse-mounted cavalry to mechanized warfare.

The collection consists of two miniature sterling silver presentation dishes and an elegant miniature trophy-form loving cup, each finely engraved with competition inscriptions tied to mounted cavalry events and achievements. The engravings reference the Cavalry School at Fort Riley and competitions involving mounted pistol exercises and cross-country night rides — demanding events that tested horsemanship, discipline, navigation, and combat readiness. The pieces were awarded to 1st Lt. Leon K. Kirkland, adding a strong sense of personal military history and authenticity to the grouping.
