Discovered as a remarkable surviving group, this rare collection of sterling silver military presentation pieces offers a fascinating glimpse into the elite world of the U.S. Army Horse Cavalry during the final golden age of mounted warfare. Dating from 1935 and 1936, the set was presented to the same soldier while attending the famed Cavalry School at Fort Riley, Kansas — one of the most prestigious military training institutions in America before the transition from horse-mounted cavalry to mechanized warfare.
The collection consists of two miniature sterling silver presentation dishes and an elegant miniature trophy-form loving cup, each finely engraved with competition inscriptions tied to mounted cavalry events and achievements. The engravings reference the Cavalry School at Fort Riley and competitions involving mounted pistol exercises and cross-country night rides — demanding events that tested horsemanship, discipline, navigation, and combat readiness. The pieces were awarded to 1st Lt. Leon K. Kirkland, adding a strong sense of personal military history and authenticity to the grouping.
Each piece is marked sterling and displays a beautiful aged patina that enhances the deeply engraved inscriptions and elegant forms. The collection possesses both strong decorative appeal and historical significance, especially for collectors of militaria, cavalry memorabilia, equestrian antiques, or early American military history.
The total combined sterling silver weight is approximately 91 grams. The oval dish measures approximately 3.5 inches wide by 2.75 inches deep. The circular tray measures 3.75 inches in diameter and 0.25 inch high. The miniature trophy cup measures approximately 3 inches high and 2.75 inches wide/deep. Good antique condition with light signs of wear and handing. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Founded in the late 19th century, the Cavalry School at Fort Riley became internationally respected for training America’s mounted officers in advanced horsemanship, reconnaissance, tactics, and cavalry warfare. By the mid-1930s, however, the traditional horse cavalry era was nearing its end as mechanized armored units began replacing mounted troops. As such, surviving presentation items from this period represent artifacts from the closing chapter of a legendary military tradition.
A rare and highly evocative surviving ensemble from the twilight years of the American Horse Cavalry, this collection beautifully captures the spirit of discipline, tradition, and mounted military excellence.
