Hinged leaves could be raised when a larger table was required, while pivoting leg frames opened beneath them like gates to provide support. When the meal or gathering was over, the leaves folded away and the table returned to a narrow, unobtrusive form. British examples dating from the late 1600s onward illustrate the long history and enduring usefulness of this ingenious construction.
