Its richly colored porcelain body, romantic hand-painted scenes and finely cast gilt-bronze mounts reflect the luxurious character of French Louis XVI–inspired decorative arts.
The porcelain has a deep cobalt-blue ground embellished with raised gilt scrollwork and ornamental borders. Two painted reserves decorate the exterior: one depicts an impressive château surrounded by a scenic landscape, while the other shows an elegantly dressed romantic couple. The detailed compositions provide a beautiful contrast to the intense blue ground and warm gold decoration.
The interior of both the bowl and its removable lid is decorated with delicate multicolored floral sprays, making the piece attractive whether displayed open or closed. Gilt-bronze handles, decorative feet and a sculptural finial complete the design and give the bowl an elegant architectural form.
The base bears a French-style porcelain mark, and the painted decoration includes an artist’s signature. This refined piece is ideal for a mantelpiece, console table, display cabinet or collection of French porcelain.
