Striking mid-century modern rocking chair attributed to Arthur Umanoff for Washington Woodcraft, circa 1960s.
The chair features a sculptural solid wood frame, broad shaped seat, dramatically curved crest rail, tapered supports, and a beautifully woven rattan back panel. The combination of warm wood and natural rattan gives the piece a distinctly organic quality while retaining the clean, architectural lines associated with Umanoff’s work.
This example is unmarked, but its form, construction, proportions, and dimensions closely correspond to documented Arthur Umanoff rocking chairs produced by Washington Woodcraft. Documented examples measure approximately 21.5” W × 29–29.5” D × 37–38” H; this chair measures 21” W × 29” D × 38” H.
The chair retains its vintage finish and presents beautifully overall. The woven rattan panel is especially attractive and remains intact. There is age-appropriate surface wear throughout, including a small area of loss/chipping at one end of the upper crest rail, photographed in detail. These imperfections are consistent with age and do not detract from the sculptural character of the piece.
A distinctive and increasingly collectible example of American mid-century design, suitable as a statement chair in a living room, bedroom, library, or collected modern interior.
