Constructed on an impressive large scale, the case displays a beautifully figured wood exterior alive with dramatic swirling grain patterns and deep warm tones that shimmer beneath the aged finish. The elegant form is enhanced by an unusual and highly distinctive double-strap design, featuring substantial brass securing straps that not only reinforce the structure but also allow for the addition of padlocks.

The inset lock plate stamped “Bramah Lock London,” a highly significant detail that immediately elevates the piece into the realm of luxury Victorian furnishings. Founded by the celebrated inventor Joseph Bramah in the late 18th century, Bramah Locks became internationally renowned for their advanced engineering and exceptional security. Bramah locks were famously considered virtually unpickable during the 19th century and were frequently fitted to high-end writing slopes, strongboxes, and fine traveling cases belonging to wealthy clients and members of the upper classes.

Perhaps most captivating of all is the original engraved brass presentation plaque mounted to the top, which reads:

“Presented to W.H.H.C. Mombray from the Servants of Cockairnie on the Occasion of His Marriage, 11th Octr. 1888.”

Cockairnie House was a notable Scottish country estate located in Fife, Scotland, associated with landed gentry families during the Victorian era. The presentation nature of this piece strongly suggests it was commissioned as an important celebratory gift for a member of the Mombray family upon his marriage in 1888.

Its grand proportions further distinguish the piece, measuring approximately 20 inches wide, 10.25 inches deep, and 8 inches high. This piece has a great presentation but does have some condition issues with signs of wear and use. There is a slight lifting of the straps on top of the lid. The interior is damaged, the leather writing surface has detached in the center. There are a few loose wood pieces and likely a few piece missing. There was a secret compartment that is now viewable without a wood cover. This would be an interesting restoration project or still looks great as is in showing the age.
