Antique English Brass and Iron Fire Stop Paperweight Signed "CSJ," Circa 1850
A handsome and substantial mid-Victorian English brass and iron paperweight, traditionally known in England as a fire stop, dating to approximately 1850. Cast in solid brass over a weighted iron base, the piece displays a bold architectural silhouette with stylized lion's paw terminals flanking a central flame finial, reflecting the restrained elegance and craftsmanship characteristic of English decorative metalwork of the period.
Originally designed as a decorative hearth accessory, fire stops were positioned near the fireplace to secure hearth rugs or complement fenders and other fireside furnishings. Their considerable weight and sculptural form have made them highly desirable today as distinctive desk paperweights and decorative objects.
The paperweight is cast with rounded, sculptural contours and retains a rich, naturally aged brass patina with darker oxidation accentuating the recessed details. The underside preserves its original iron backing plate, secured by a central screw, providing exceptional weight and stability. It is engraved on the underside with the script cipher "CSJ," along with an impressed inventory or pattern number.
Its understated yet monumental design exemplifies the functional beauty of Victorian English brasswork, where everyday household objects were elevated through thoughtful design and fine craftsmanship. Equally suited to a library, office, or collector's cabinet, this rare survivor serves as both a practical desktop accessory and an evocative reminder of 19th-century English domestic life.
