Four Early 19th Century Hand-Colored French Primate Engravings by Jean-Baptiste Audebert
An exceptional set of four original hand-colored copperplate engravings from Jean-Baptiste Audebert's (1759–1800) celebrated Histoire Naturelle des Singes et des Makis (Natural History of Monkeys and Lemurs), published in Paris circa 1800–1805. Produced during the height of the French Enlightenment and the early Napoleonic period, Audebert's monumental publication is regarded among the finest achievements in natural history illustration, admired for its scientific accuracy, elegant compositions, and remarkably refined hand coloring.
Each engraving is engraved and colored after Audebert's original drawings and bears the engraved credit "Audebert pinx. et sculp." with the Finot printer's imprint. The suite illustrates four remarkable primate species known to European naturalists at the turn of the nineteenth century: Le Mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx), the vividly colored African mandrill; L'Entelle (Semnopithecus entellus), the graceful Hanuman langur of India; L'Indri (Indri indri), Madagascar's largest living lemur; and Le Papion (Simia sphinx), an early French designation for the baboon. Together they reflect the growing scientific fascination with exotic wildlife and the expanding natural history collections of Europe's leading museums.
Unlike many later zoological prints, Audebert's engravings were individually hand colored, creating subtle tonal variations and lifelike detail that distinguish each impression. Their restrained compositions, placing each animal against a largely unadorned background, emphasize anatomical study while achieving remarkable artistic elegance.
Presented as a cohesive set of four in complementary later oak frames with linen mats, these engravings make a striking decorative statement while representing one of the most influential illustrated zoological publications of the early nineteenth century. Equally suited to traditional libraries, studies, or contemporary interiors, they appeal to collectors of natural history, French prints, and scientific illustration.
Condition: Overall very good antique condition. The engravings retain attractive original hand coloring with pleasing age-related toning. Each sheet exhibits scattered foxing and minor spotting consistent with early nineteenth-century paper, adding to their authentic character. The prints are well presented in later custom oak frames with linen mats and remain ready for display.
