Pair of Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Seated Whippet Figures, Circa 1860
His charming pair of Victorian Staffordshire pottery models depicts seated whippets with elegant proportions and wonderfully expressive hand-painted faces. Dating to the third quarter of the 19th century, the figures capture the graceful build of the breed with slender legs, long necks, narrow chests, and gently arched backs, reflecting the sporting traditions that made whippets and greyhounds enduring subjects of English pottery.
Each figure is press-molded in earthenware and finished with traditional lead glazes. Their red-and-white coats are rendered with sponge and hand-painted decoration, while the naturalistic mound bases feature rich green and manganese glazes that evoke grassy terrain. The naïve yet confident modeling, visible brushwork, and slight asymmetry are hallmarks of authentic Staffordshire production and contribute to their unmistakable Victorian charm.
Whippets were admired throughout the 19th century as symbols of speed, loyalty, and refinement, making canine figures among the most beloved decorative wares produced by the Staffordshire potteries. These smaller examples are less frequently encountered than the larger mantel dogs, making them particularly appealing to collectors of English ceramics and country house decorations.
The pair measures 4 inches high by 2 inches in diameter each. Minor variations between the figures are entirely consistent with hand-molded and hand-decorated pottery of the period and should be appreciated as evidence of their individual craftsmanship rather than imperfections.
Whether displayed on a bookshelf, in a cabinet, or within a collection of English pottery, these engaging whippets offer authentic Victorian character and timeless decorative appeal.
